Final marks

Dear Students,

A few announcements:

FINAL MARKS

THANK YOU FOR A VERY GOOD SEMESTER. IT WAS A PLEASURE TO WORK WITH YOU AND LEARN ABOUT MATH. (I LEARNED A LOT!). BEST OF LUCK IN THE FUTURE. CONTINUE TO STUDY ENGLISH AND YOU WILL SEE THAT MANY DOORS OPEN!!!

Answers

Dear Students,

Because the answers to the homework are on a Pdf file, I cannot upload them as a Gdoc. Thus, the document is in the "archivos" folder of Virtual. Miguel, email me (sabdore@gmail.com), and I'll send you the document!

Remember, the next time we meet, you have a quiz on Abel and Galois and discourse markers. Because we need to prepare for the final exam, plan to have 30 minutes of class before the quiz. Also, on the 22nd, you have an obligatory workshop.

Another announcement: SOON I will publish the names of students who do not have to take the final exam. I will base the results on marks up until the 3rd quiz as explained in class.

If we do not have class on Nov. 24th, your final exam will be on Friday, Nov. 25th at 16:30.

Best,
Sabrina

I'm posting the answers as a Pdf image.

Dear Students,

Nobody has emailed me so I have no information regarding a change of plans for tomorrow. Therefore, I will assume that tomorrow is a NORMAL day, with class beginning at 15:00. We will continue on the History of Algebra and take the mini-quiz (=control) on new vocabulary from classroom presentations.

Please note, your 3rd quiz will be on Thursday, November 3rd. I will publish the contents later in the week. Please check on the weekend. (IF THERE IS NO CLASS TOMORROW, THE QUIZ DATE WILL NOT CHANGE. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE HANDOUTS FROM THIS BLOG).

Note: Freddy is uploading to the "files" (=archivos) folder in Virtual the material he prepared for yesterday's workshop. This MAY appear on the quiz, so please do NOT disregard (=ignore) it.

No classes this week

Dear Students,

Because of the seminar and/or strike tomorrow, there will be no English class as we agreed. Furthermore, because of the "claustro" on Thursday and Friday, we cannot have classes after 13:30 these two days. This means that our next class will be on Tuesday, October 25th. I would like to have an extra class on Thursday, Oct. 27th at 13:30. Does this work for you? Please, talk and let me know by e-mail or this blog (you can leave a comment) if this is OK. I will need to reserve a room!

Clarifications:
The next time we meet, we will continue with presentations.

Have a good week!

Learning Vocabulary

Dear Students,

Remember that your goal (= objective) is to learn many (MANY!) words in English. In the long term, it is best that you do this by NOT just translating the word English-Spanish. It is better to work with the word by...

1) writing a synonym
2) writing an antonym
3) giving a visual representation (i.e. drawing) the word.
4) using it in context (write a phrase).
5) defining the word
6) ?
7) ?
8) as a final resort...translate.

(What was 6 and 7?) Help me by writing a comment!

Study the bold words!

Week of Aug. 22

Hello Class,

This week we will explore Pythagoras's Theorem and, connected to English, study SHAPES, COLORS, and words used to COMPARE objects. Words that compare objects frequently end in "-er" or "-est". We also use the word "more" sometimes.

Click here to visit some interactive sites:

(It is not necessary that you write comparatives, but you need to comprehend comparatives when you read).

Video: comparatives with countries (i.e. Russia, China, Chile, England, etc.)
(You can practice listening. Also, you can repeat to practice speaking English)

Class 1: Homework

Dear Students,

Note: understand = comprehend

Your homework is to visit this site and copy in your notebook all the words that you understand. Mark the words that are cognates (words that look similar and have the same meaning in English and Spanish).

Pythagoras Theorem

Now, select 5 words that do not understand but think are important to comprehend the text or math problem. Copy these words into your notebook. Look them up in a dictionary. Write the translation in Spanish and, if possible, a synonym in English.

Week 1: Program and online dictionary

Here is the program for your convenience:

If you have questions, please talk to me!

And, if you need an online dictionary to help you with your studies, you can use...

(Do you notice some words are in bold--"negritas"? These are useful words for you to learn!)
